Brought to you by Style Studio

This is part of my new series on the top beauty tips to help you work with your hair colour, whether you're a blonde, brunette or redhead.

Blondes, you can find my top 10 beauty tips every blonde should know here and brunettes might like to consider what matters once you go lighter with your hair colour. Redheads will be up next.

My hair is naturally brown, but I've been playing with the colour since I was a teenager. Not that long ago, I went back to brunette and it made me realise how much your hair colour affects more than just your hair. I had to reconsider my wardrobe and my make-up bag. My whole beauty routine needed an update to make the most of my new hair colour.

Now, wherever you fall on the brunette scale, these beauty tips will help you make the most of your hair and create an effortless beauty routine.

Here are the top 10 beauty tips every brunette needs to know.

Cool it down

From light ash brown to cool dark brown, these cooler brunette shades lend themselves to soft smoky make-up looks. Cool brunettes want to avoid any gold tones in their hair and the same goes for their make-up. Create a soft contrast with smoky greys and taupes on your eyes.

Warm it up

In total contrast, warm brunettes love golds and reds. From subtle caramel highlights to rich auburn tones, warm brunette hair lends itself to bronze make-up looks. Warm brunette is very flattering on olive skin or if you have a peachy complexion. A few highlights can add depth to warm brunettes.

Never enough shine

Unlike blondes, it's easy to add shine to brown hair. If your hair is looking a little dull, I love the Schwarzkopf Oil Elixir for an instant shine. Whether your hair is natural or dyed darker, I also highly recommend using a gloss to add more shine to dark hair. I love a semi permanent colour to really enhance natural hair and it can add in shine to hair that's been a little sun-damaged too. Schwarzkopf Live Colour is a semi-permanent you can do at home in less than half an hour to enhance your natural brunette hair.

Blushing Brunette

If you have dark hair and fair skin, rose colour blushes are the perfect match. Rosy pinks and browns will add that perfect flush. On darker skins pink blushes are still a perfect match, and choose either a cool pink or a warm pink to match the tone of your hair.

Lip Love

Brunettes are lucky and can experiment more with their make-up than any other hair colour. Red lipstick is perfect for brunettes, so wear your brightest shade and smile. If you prefer a neutral lip, steer clear of pearly roses and instead go for brownish pinks and plums.

Make friends with dry shampoo

Many brunettes avoid dry shampoo out of fear of white (or grey) marks left behind, but it doesn't have to be this way. Here's my trick: after you spray dry shampoo on the roots of your hair, wait one minute. Yes, keep waiting one short minute. You can keep doing your makeup or getting ready. Then once that minute is up, I'm 99% sure there won't be any white residue left and if there is, it will be easily brushed through your hair. Your hair won't look grey and you won't have those shiny, oily roots anymore.

Brunettes with highlights

Now if you've accented your beautiful brunette hair with some lighter highlights, even just some caramel browns, you may notice over time that they can become a little brassy. I love the Schwarzkopf Live Silver Toner for blondes to keep your brunette highlights looking fresh and clean. This is particularly great if you have cooler brunette hair and want to keep any gold tones at bay. Just because it says it's for blondes, doesn't mean it won't refresh your light brunette highlights.

Rich chocolate

I love chocolate brown hair, and it looks its best when it's really shiny. To keep that shine, protect your hair from the sun by wearing a hat and use Schwarzkopf Colour Refresh Mousse. Seriously, it only takes three minutes to do and adds the most beautiful shine to your hair. It's a step you can do weekly as well. A beauty note for chocolate brunettes: copper and honey eyes look amazing on you.

Brighten up

Now if you have mid tone brunette hair, this is your time to shine. Bright make-up looks amazing on you. So have fun with vibrant colours and play up your favourite features with a smoky eye or a bright lip.

It's all in the eyes

As well as matching your make-up to your hair colour, also consider your eye colour to play around with different shades. Green eyes look perfect with plum shadows; brown eyes can wear beautiful navy shadows and blue eyes suit lighter taupes and tones.

Now, before you take these tips as rules that can't be broken, remember that I don't think that there are any beauty rules. My tips are only here to guide you and make decisions. So you should wear your favourite colour the way you like to if that's what works for you.
